Zuena Aziz has been serving as the Principal Coordinator of SDGs Affairs at the Prime Minister’s Office since 1st January 2020. Among others, she steers the “SDGs Implementation and Review Committee” that is responsible for the coordination of actions related to SDGs done by different Ministries under the supervision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister. The Government of Bangladesh has been implementing the SDGs following the “Whole of the Society Approach” incorporating all stakeholders, and the Principal Coordinator at the PMO is the centre point of all coordination.
Earlier to her present assignment, she was working as the Senior Secretary at the Ministry of Social Welfare and contributed a lot to the successful implementation of the National Social Security Strategy (NSSS) that was approved by the Government of Bangladesh in 2015.
Ms. Zuena was promoted as the Secretary to the Government on 11th May 2016 and was posted as a Member of the Bangladesh Planning Commission. Being the Member (Secretary) of (a) Industry & Energy Division and (b) Physical Infrastructure Division of Bangladesh Planning Commission, she contributed greatly to the successful implementation of the Government’s “Vision 2021” and associated 1st Perspective Plan of Bangladesh (2010-2021), 7th Five Year Plan (2016-2020), and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She also worked as the Secretary of the ICT Division where her motto was to materialize the vision of “Digital Bangladesh”, aspired by the Hon’ble Prime Minister.
Ms. Zuena joined Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration) Cadre in 1986 and performed her responsibilities in different capacities at the field-level administration as well as at the central level. She served as the Thana Nirbahi Officer (TNO) of Sreepur Upazila of Gazipur District. Later she held important positions in various departments/divisions including Department of Primary Education, Ministry of Public Administration, Economic Relations Division (ERD), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Ministry of Women & Children Affairs, and Local Government Division. With her hard work, commitment, dedication, talent and wisdom, she crossed so many tiers of administration and today she has reached one of the topmost positions of the public administration of the Government of Bangladesh.
After completing the secondary and higher secondary education from Noakhali, Ms. Zuena earned BA (Hons) and MA degrees in the discipline of Bengali language & literature from the University of Dhaka. She later completed higher courses on Management from Bradford University, on Financial Management from the University of Birmingham and on Leading Economic Growth from Harvard University.
Zuena Aziz was born in Noakhali District. Her father, Mr. Azizul Haque, was a veteran freedom fighter, and mother, Ms. Mukima Khatun, was a Government School Teacher. Her spouse, Mr. Enayet Hossain Khan, is a senior journalist. Her son, Baezid Farabi Khan, works for the Government of Bangladesh as an Assistant Commissioner, and her daughter, Barrister Subeh Ashfarah, is a lawyer of Bangladesh High Court Division.
